Borrowing from the scientific considerations of the holographic paradigm, the Hologramophonic Universe is one in which perceived audalities are not entirely independent of one another, best described in the quote by microsound-master-flash, DJ Itzhak Bentov:

"We can say that we have two kinds of order or audalities: the one-to-one mix, which is evident to the senses, and the hologramophonic order. It appears that the one-to-one mix order derives from or is based on the hologramophonic one, which is more basic. The hologramophonic audality is based on the dynamic relationship or interaction of wavefronts, which causes a diffusion of signal information throughout a mix, but at the same time, each element of the surface or volume of that mix contains all the information comprised in the whole mix structure."

One might consider then that the cuts featured on this e.p. are experiments in sound which are on the surface reflective of one another, but which intrinsically contain the totality of one another at the core of process and intent.

rules: use software synthesizers, samplers, DIY studios, plug-ins, and databending to generate original sound content; combine files in SoundForge or multitrack environment into a single 3-5 minute track; a working local library of about 20 individual sound files generated through various forms of digital synthesis

skools: (working title: Ghouls Night Out) - Having composed the piece around Halloween, it took on the mood of a soundtrack for an all-night party of techno-ghouls, slithering into the event only to catch the first wave of their e-go just as the music crescendos. That image gave way after discovering that the Misfits had a well-known song called "Ghouls Night Out". Instead I decided to opt for images outside of my original zombie-raver idea, which had obviously previously been addressed. So I googled the initials GNO and came up with numerous Asian sites, and one Italian one which captured my interest, and which I felt fit in with the overall science/humor titling of the hologramophonic project. GNO (Gallium Neutrino Observatory) at LNGS (Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso), Italy, measures the low energy solar neutrino flux with a gallium detector. Even though I don't know what that means, it sounds sexy. I got a lot of mileage out of this find, carrying the theme over into the title of the sound sculpture piece, PsyPhy Neutrino Flux. (Nonetheless, I can still see the dead happily waving their glow stix when I listen to the piece.)

skools: Videographer RC had put together snippets of dialogue and noise into a comical narrative sound swirl. My job, as I saw it, was to remix the piece into something incorporating elements which morphed from spoken sound bites to notational interplay. For me, this was reminiscent of a sound project I'd done in 1996, called "Toony People", constructed entirely from human voices. This remix became an experiment of the same sort, relying almost entirely on the spoken word samples - tweaking them using Sound Forge to create carefully edited clips, compressing layers of percussive dialogue bits in Live with additional effects, and sequencing in Acid.

tools: WWW, CD sources, Sound Forge

rules: use SoundForge to create 3-5 minutes of original ambient sound; create at least 10 original sound events between 3-15 seconds, combine into a 2-5 minute sound sculpture
(these student sound sculptures, 16 total, served as the basis for the permutation of 'seed' remix tracks)

skools: (working title: PsyPhyMixPaste) - I went for a more sci-fi title, especially after changing the title of "Ghouls" & deciding on a sort of faux-scientific title for the overall project. Saying that this track was "written" by E23 is sort of a misnomer - the sound sources were derived from numerous web and CD audio sources, and include snippets of Klaus Schulze samples; Alvin Lucier samples; a 1979 recording of Bigfoot; a recording of Aleister Crowley's Call to the Aether in the angelic Enochian language; statements by Capt. Virgil Thompson regarding a crashed UFO at White Sands, NM; acapella vocalizations of Marie Daulne (Zap Mama) and Scratch (The Roots) from their cover of Autechre's "Gnit"; and a keyboard loop from Terry Riley's "A Rainbow In Curved Air" - all heavily processed, edited and tweaked exclusively in Sound Forge. Wicked, noisy, evil ambience and gritty click-hop. I didn't intend for this to be a dark track, but it seems to be the consensus that's what emerged from the audio sessions. I wasn't even in a grim mood - I guess I just wanted some sounds there were sort of crunchy... Intended originally to be a participatory remix in the Re-Gnit project on commtom, but which morphed into something incorporating many other weird vocal elements and atmospheres, and which I felt took it out of the domain of a Gnit remix.

skools: This was a case of the cart before the horse. As soon as I'd completed it, I knew that I wanted to remix the seed02 iteration into something decidedly more dancey. Then I worked on the cover art and titling before I'd completed the track. so I guess there was a pressure to do the name justice, and I dove into a 25 minute jam of the sound bank before I started to chop it into its modestified 9+ minute format. This additionally used a couple license-free samples to help punch the a few sections of drum-beat sound, and some slices of pianoesque melodies I'd written for an earlier demo not related to this project.

skools: Each student placed an audio file into a PC folder for each of the total students (16); these files were to make up our sound bank. Then a sheet of paper for each student / artist was passed around at random, and the factors listed above were filled in by participants. How I was supposed to rectify the mood and location suggested contributed to my choice in titling this piece. However the constraints of sample length and required effect forced me into a direction I'd never choose to pursue - made especially difficult by the fact that the majority of the audio files were samples under 1 second! So between the process of lengthening the audio and gating it, I was quickly pleased with the resultant sounds. Originally a composition I largely dreaded undertaking, I now consider it to be one of the more musical selections in the collection.

skools: Perhaps the cozier of the two re-remixes, I attempted to blend many different sound elements which felt toasty n cuddly to my ears. Some moments of bouncy dance and goofy acid interlaced with warm fireside snuggles n ring modulation. The potential in this track to kick up the tempo and get funky with some glitch and beats led me to revision it for seed03.
